Coronavirus did not stop 420 celebrations across the World

Despite the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, the World Cannabis Day is celebrated. World Cannabis Day is otherwise known as 4/20, and it is a day set aside by the cannabis users. It has its origins in 1971, when a group of five high school boys (Steve Capper, Jeffery Noel, Larry Schwart, David Reddix and Mark Gravich) decided to embark on a mission to locate a forgotten cannabis crop. They tried locating the crop with a map originally designed by the grower of the crop. Asides coding the mission as "4/20", they had their plot meetings at 4:20 PM. Although they failed in their several attempts to locate the crop, the code morphed into a universal code used by teens when referring to cannabis consumption.

The code has since morphed into

The code has since morphed into a huge concept that had a day (April 20) set aside for public consumption of cannabis. Although an illegal substance, cannabis users would gather annually to publicly light up marijuana at exactly 4:20 PM and have some puff. This became a form of celebration which later had some political agenda to it. Users do this as a form of protest to advocate the legalization of cannabis. Becoming a global event, public figures such as Paul Birch have commented that it has become an unstoppable event. As an annual event, it is ordinarily assumable that it will not hold this year because of the global lockdown due to the coronavirus. Surprisingly, it did — with the cannabis fanatics resorting to performing the ritual on the internet.

CORONAVIRUS DID NOT STOP THE 2020 420 CELEBRATION

Although a public gathering is not possible this year, marijuana fanatics found different ways to have the celebration. For instance, medical marijuana patients were seen celebrating with neighbors, giving themselves a healthy distance. Some other people were reported to have gotten creative by blending in marijuana into their desserts as well as hot wings they consumed on the day. According to ABC News, popular cannabis fanatics like Chong and his buddy, Cheech Marin took the celebration online because of the lockdown.

In fact, cannabis buddies thought up various new methods to celebrate 420 Day. Many cannabis fanatics decided to videocall their smoking buddies, while they watched each other puff and cheer. Some reported to playing group games, but the biggest of them all was the virtual parties thrown online. Many virtual parties were thrown online, particularly using the Zoom video app. The Zoom video app which is mostly used by the corporate individuals had a huge traffic from marijuana users. They could not step out because of the stay-at-home orders, so they had to seek other means.

In Vacouver, users were reported to have their celebrations online. Another base for marijuana users, they could not let the day pass without performing the ritual. Rather than the usual disturbance of parks and major roads, Vancouver residents were invited to join the virtual party online at www.420vancouver.com. While most users found it as a means to celebrate by performing the annual ritual, some found it as an aid to help reduce the anxiety attached to the pandemic.
