Cannabis originates from the buds and drupes extracted from the herbs of cannabis sativa, cannabis indica and cannabis ruderalis. Once the extraction occurs they are dried up to produce cannabis which is also called marijuana or weed. Cannabis is consumed by smoking, vaping and can be cooked in food. It can be used as a spice when cooking food and to bake cakes and cookies.

Cannabis when smoked gives you a high or stoned feeling as a result of tetrahydrocannibol which is its main component. You may feel confused, paranoid, have hallucinations, feel happiness and laugh after smoking or eating cannabis and this feeling wears off after an average of 6 hours. Cannabis can be used for medicinal and recreational purposes. For example; cancer patients consume cannabis to help numb and manage the pain from all the chemotherapy treatments.

Legality of cannabis has always been a disputed topic in countries all over the world. This is due to the contradictory views people have about cannabis. People tend to focus on cannabis as a drug that is mostly abused by youths when having fun and its negative effects forgetting it has benefits too. Cannabis is used in the manufacture of medicines such as Epidolex which is used to treat seizures from epileptic patients and those with the dravet syndrome and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States.

Around the world, there are many governments that have allowed the use of cannabis for its citizens and have legalized it. Others have put in place decriminalization policies in their countries which allow the possession of cannabis to be treated as a minor offence and no penalties are charged. Canada made cannabis legal in 2018 allowing the citizens to consume it for recreation purposes and also for medical uses. Cultivation of cannabis in Canada is only allowed for those citizens that are licenced by it.

Legality of cannabis

In the United States, some of its states have legalized the use of cannabis and a few others consider cannabis illegal. The states that consider it illegal punishes the citizens found in possession of cannabis by imprisonment. The government of Mexico has put in place strict regulations on the cultivation of cannabis and it also prohibits the sale of cannabis among its citizens. However, consumption of cannabis in small amounts at your home or indoors is decriminalized.

In Jamaica, cannabis was decriminalized in 2015 and it allows rastafarians to cultivate it and consume it in unlimited amounts. Colombia decriminalized the consumption of cannabis in 2009 and it has allowed its use for recreation for upto 20 grams. The cultivation and commercial sale of weed is still illegal but the government has put in place statutes that allows planting of not more than 20 trees.

Governments of Ecuador, Peru, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland, Croatia, Czetch Republic, Estonia, Russia and Ukraine have decriminalized the recreational use of cannabis to upto a limited quantity. In Spain, its government passed a bill in 2017 to make cannabis legal for both purposes.
