Abigayle Miranda
Cannabis, the world's most abused drug, was illegal in Canada until 2018 when the Canadian government allowed its cultivation and use. What led to its legalization was the effecting of the Cannabis Act which happened in October the same year, formally enabling Canadian citizens to use cannabis and its products. Cannabis is the most abused substance on the globe. Also, it is among the most illegal substances to possess or use in many countries around the world. In this plant, there are plenty of active chemical compounds; the most active compound is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol ), which is responsible for altering the physiological state of cannabis users. These chemicals are concentrated only in certain parts of the cannabis plant such as on its seeds and leaves.

When cannabis is consumed, the THC compound shifts the physiological state of the consumer; making the consumer to experience different levels of hallucination. Cannabis still remains illegal in many countries around the world, however, there is an increasing number of activists who have come out to push for its legalization. Here, you will get to discover the benefits of the cannabis plant and why it should be legalized.

If a person is experiencing reduced

Cannabis has an array of medical uses; today, a synthetic form of cannabis known as Marinol is being used to treat a number of life-threatening medical conditions.

If a person is experiencing reduced or loss of appetite, nausea, and reducing body weight, then Marinol is the effective drug that treats these conditions. This drug is synthesized as capsules of different weights (2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg), which are administered to the patients to help them. Despite the life saving medicinal properties of this drug, it, unfortunately, has a number of side effects. Cannabis users often experience tachycardia (increased heart rate), hallucination, and decreased body energy.

There are other medical uses of cannabis; one key use is the use of cannabinoids to treat an eye condition medically known as glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease that affects the eyes which if left untreated, can result in total blindness to the person suffering from it. The initiation, development, and progress of glaucoma disease is as a result of the increase in intraocular pressure in the eyes. Research by medical scientists has demonstrated that cannabis can lower this pressure thereby treating this condition.

Even though cannabis has numerous medical use, most people still believe that its consumption causes several undesired health issues. Cannabis has been shown to affect the brain of its users; often resulting in devastating effects. Consumption of cannabis alters the state of mind of the user mainly by affecting memory and learning processes. One of its chemical components called tetrahydrocannabinol interacts with the cannabinoid receptors on the user's brain, therefore, impairing cognitive ability.

Cannabis remains to be a plant with a wide range of applications; some people are okay with its use while others are not. But irrespective of the stand you take, it is important to ensure that it is being used for the right purpose. About legalizing it? There is no problem if it is legalized. However, its benefits and undesired effects should first be considered before its official legalization.
