The Origin of Cannabis

Isai Allison
Cannabis is a psychoactive drug used for medicinal and recreational purposes. Its history dates back to 500 BC, where communities in Asia used it as herbal medicine. It has its origin in Central Asia before its introduction to Africa and other continents. The Spanish introduced cannabis to North America, where it was grown by colonialists to make ropes and textile products while the seeds used as food. Traditionally cannabis was used to treat nausea, depression, Malaria, and gout. For thousands of years, it was used for recreational purposes until 1930 when it was declared illegal.

Muslims used pot for fun purposes since the Koran forbade alcohol, but Marijuana wasn't. Around 800 AD, people began talking about the plant's high effects. In the mid-1500s, the Spanish brought cannabis to the United States intending to plant it for hemp that was used to make durable fibers for bags, ropes, and paper. African slaves who were taken to work in Brazilian farms traveled back with the seeds since they were allowed to plant the crop for smoking. In 1890, cotton took over as an alternative cash crop for strong fiber, and the demand for hemp dropped. While escaping war as a result of the revolution, Mexicans brought cannabis with them, which had high intoxicating levels.

The United States classified it as

During those years, it was an ingredient in many medicinal products, but cocaine and opium had more medical uses. Europe and American countries began to ban the use of drugs in 1910. However, it was not until 1925 that pot was forbidden, and its usage stopped in countries such as the United States. In 1920 it became so popular due to the ban, and it became a rage among pop and jazz musicians.

The United States classified it as a schedule one drug in 1970, which meant that it was highly abused and was not fit for medicinal prescriptions. Strict laws were passed, and the possession of cannabis was considered illegal by the American government. Due to these restrictions, Colombia took over as the leading supplier of the drug through illegal smuggling.

The Origin of Cannabis

In India, cannabis was used for religious purposes, and a drink they called bhang was created in 1,000 BC. This drink was a mixture of milk, cannabis, among other ingredients, and it is still used as an anesthetic. Different cultures, such as the Greeks, used Marijuana for recreation and religious purposes and to treat pain and earache. Extracts from medical texts in Rome indicate that it was used to cure pain and reduce sexual desires. In Arab, cannabis treated syphilis, migraines, and pain. The English used it to treat menstrual cramps, muscle spasm, insomnia, and promoted contracting during childbirth.

While its consumption for recreation and medicine is a subject of debate, cannabis remains to be illegal in many countries. Some states in the United States have passed laws to legalize it for fun and medical reasons. It was planted as an oilseed and then as a fiber crop in Asia and America. Today, information about pot has spread out all over the world, and it is known for the high effects that it brings when a person smokes or cooks it in food.
