When Cannabis Leaves Curl Down

Elijah Farley
Cannabis, hemp or marijuana plant is a tall plant which could either be male or female and is therefore said to be dioecious. There are about three species of the cannabis plant and they are harvested about four to five months after planting because they mature in about four months. The different parts of the cannabis or hemp plant have both industrial and medical application.

Oils extracted from the seeds and stalk of the cannabis plant are used in the production of bio diesel, plastics, oil paint, creams, ropes and fiber. It is used as a component of bird feed mix and as a mop crop to clear impurities out of waste water. In medicine, extracted components are used in treatment or management of pain, diseases and depression.

Cannabis can be grown by three major systems including the outdoor, hydroponic and aeroponic cultivation.

Aeroponic cultivation involves the growth of

The outdoor cultivation of cannabis is relatively cheap and very easily handled as no special equipment is necessary. This method provides for a large planting space along with sufficient access to sunlight and nutrients.

The hydroponic growing of cannabis involves frequently flooding a pot or trough containing gravel with water and fertilizer. This method is more expensive than the outdoor cultivation method but has an excellent yield potential if time and effort is consistently dedicated to its cause.

Aeroponic cultivation involves the growth of roots of the plant in air rather than in soil or other medium. Water and fertilizer is sprayed on the suspended roots of the cannabis plant nestled with a mesh basket. This method of growing cannabis quickly produces a very good yield although it is as expensive as the hydroponic cultivation method. Mistakes in this method are dire as plants can die off quickly if pH balance or nutrient level is not correct.

A deficiency or surplus of the

Cannabis plants are usually trained through methods such as low stress training, topping and pinching. This training is done to increase their yield by manipulating the plant into an advantageous growth shape or by changing and maximizing the effect of hormone distribution.

Cannabis plants require certain conditions that include a basic growth medium with a pH that ranges between 5.8 and 6.5 for their growth and yield. An optimal temperature range, light, enough water and nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Boron are also required in the germination of cannabis.

A deficiency or surplus of the requirements for growth or an attack by pests could result in a wide array of symptoms. The downward curling of leaves of the cannabis plant could result from a surplus or deficiency of nutrients.

When Cannabis Leaves Curl Down

Nitrogen toxicity is said to be a harmful level of Nitrogen in a growth medium. It is caused by adding too much fertilizer and results in curled leaf tips and a loss of leaf mass. The green colour of the cannabis leaves also become darker and its taste is unpleasant as the plant takes up more than it can use. The downward curling of cannabis leaves can also be caused by a deficiency of boron mostly in insufficient water and low humidity conditions. Leaves of the cannabis plants would also droop where the plant is growing on bad soil with a low supply of nutrients.

Over watering is also counted as a cause of the downward curling of the cannabis plant. The leaves of the plant over watered are small, stunted, firm and curl downward often showing signs of other nutrient problems. A loss of water by the leaves faster than the roots can replace it would cause the leaf margins to curl up or down.

Root bound is described as the tangling of roots of a plant that has outgrown its trough. The symptoms, including a downward curling of leaves are similar to the symptoms present in other root problems.

Wind burn can also lead to the downward curling of leaves, a process reversible by moving the plant further away from the fan or wind source.

Generally, the downward curling of the Cannabis plant is seen as an evidence of the plants need for a change in an unfavourable condition. The plant may or may not be revived when adequate steps are taken depending on the cause of the downward curling but in most cases, there is no further curling of leaves.
