When cannabis leaves curl up

Clara Gibson
According to Wikipedia,“Cannabis cultivation dates back at least the third millennium BC in written history and possibly further back by archaeological evidence." The use of cannabis varies from places to places as it restricted by government policies of any country. Stated by Wikipedia, "The earliest restrictions on cannabis were reported in the Islamic world by the 14th century." Policies on cannabis began to change from the 14th century until this 21st century. Countries began to readjust their various perspectives towards its use and health benefits, by the decriminalization of the use of cannabis.

Wikipedia stated that“The Netherlands became the first nation to legalize cannabis and in 2015 Uruguay became the first to legalize recreational cannabis with Canada following in 2018." The cultivation of cannabis has greatly changed from the old ways of large farmlands to an era of planting in indoor fiber pots and hydroponics. A cannabis grower either on a backyard scale or a large scale dealership can be confronted with the problem of having the leaves of their cannabis curl up. Taco of the leave happens when things go wrong, the roots rot, and the leaves will begin to curl up and eventually wither. The process of having the leaves of cannabis plant curl up causes a loss of time, money, energy, and the plant itself if not given proper attention.

Harsh weather condition- When the cannabis

This problem occurs as a result of some underlying conditions enumerated below, as the causes and remedies for tacoing of cannabis leaves.

Harsh weather condition- When the cannabis plant is exposed to high or low temperatures, they tend to undergo a term called “heat stress.” Whereby the leaves of the plant begin to curl up, turn yellow, and finally get burnt to earth like dirt. Cannabis plant grows beautifully well in temperature between 11C to 30C anything below or higher than this will cause the leaves of the plant to taco.

Nutrient Poisoning- Excessive use of nutrients

Remedies- When the occurrence of curly leaves happens due to either hot or cold weather conditions, then growers must consider boosting grow lights to increase the low indoor temperatures above 11C. And also reduce high indoor temperature below 30C, through good ventilation and sunlight shielding while outdoor growers can ensure early harvest to prevent sunburn during summer.

Nutrient Poisoning- Excessive use of nutrients additives mostly by beginners is often the cause of curly leaves, they feed the plant religiously to achieve a good harvest. But they end up losing the plants as a result of giving an overdose of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Remedies- Generally, an overdose of nutrients additives will alter the pH of the soil from which your plant grows, according to royalqueenseed.com. “The suitable pH to grow your cannabis plant should be around 6pH for soil and 5.8pH for coco and hydroponics." This can be avoided by following the feeding chart guidelines of any cannabis fertilizers you intend to use and nutrients rationing.

Too much watering- The problem of either overwatering or under watering is common with new growers, as they tend to either water their plants more than normal or less than normal. Stated by royalqueenseed.com “Persistent over-watering invariably invite parasitic pythium also known as root rot.” The signs to look out for in an overwatered cannabis plant includes; leave curly up and slow growth.

Remedies- To prevent parasites from attacking your pot due to overwatering firstly, you have to make sure you don’t water your plant more than necessary. Also, monitor your plant reaction after watering, and if you notice any signs of overwatering your plant, such as leaves tacoing, stop watering. If possible drain your pot and maintain a good watering cycle by employing the use of moisture analyzer to monitor the water content of your grow room.

Humidity- This is a phenomenon whereby, there is a presence of warm and dense air conditioning surrounding the environment of the pot caused by heat. This adversely brings about tacoing, and appearance of yellow spots on the leaves, if no attention is given to these symptoms, they get burnt to dry brown leaves.

Remedies- Humidity is an occurrence that most indoor planters battle with, due to the use of confined spaces to grow their pots. This can be solved by using simple desiccant sacs placed strategically at corners of the growing room or use dehumidifiers. Which accuractely measures the temperature, maintain and help regulate the humidity of the cannabis plantation.
