When Cannabis leaves turn purple

Elijah Farley
Cannabis is a plant used to make hallucinatory drugs for medicinal and recreational purposes by harvesting its leaves, flowers, and other relevant parts. Just like any other plant, cannabis plant leaves are usually intense green. Exposure of healthy cannabis to several factors, it develops spots or experiences a change in its color on its leaves. Cannabis leaves could turn from green to purple, blue, or yellow when affected by factors such as genetics, environmental, or human activities. The factors that make cannabis leaves to turn purple, and the control measures are as discussed below.

A significant factor that causes the leaves of the cannabis plant to turn from green to purple is the impromptu lack or limited availability of nutritional elements such as phosphorus, potassium, and calcium. During flowering and flourishing, the stage of cannabis plant phosphorous and potassium are essential nutrients. The cannabis plant depends on these nutritional elements for activities of growing and flowering to take place successfully. If deprived of these nutrients, the cannabis leaves usually end up developing purple patches on their leaves, and eventually, they turn entirely from green to purple. It usually takes place in the fifth week before yielding of the plant.

Another cause of the purple color

When the temperature of the particular region where the cannabis plant is growing becomes low to about ten degrees Celcius or rises past thirty-seven degrees Celcius, the leaves turn from green to purple. This drop and rise in temperature stress the cannabis plant as it is used to the standard room temperature to produce the green pigment. The wrong Ph, which is basicity, is also a factor that leads to the development of purple leaves. These conditions of the wrong temperature and ph stops the cannabis plant from carrying out its biological functions such as photosynthesis and taking in of nutritional elements. Cannabis grows in areas that have slightly acidic ph to carry out its normal functions.

Another cause of the purple color in the cannabis plant is that some variations and species of cannabis have genes that cause them to have the purple color naturally. The varieties hail from parents that absorb a lot of anthocyanins, making them be a strain with purple hue. Example of a cannabis plant that shows the purple color on the leaves is purple haze.

The purple color in the leaves

Other factors that may lead to the formation of the purple color in cannabis leaves are the excess uptake of water, which is a reason why the plant will have little or no phosphorus. It can also damage the roots, which is not suitable for the cannabis plant. Unusually high or low moisture in the atmosphere also puts pressure on the plant, making it unable to carry out its regular biological functions. There is also the amount of light that plays a role in causing a change in color; high or low light intensity stops the plant from carrying out the photosynthesis process.

The purple color in the leaves of cannabis is not a good sign, and it signifies a lack of essential elements such as phosphorus and other nutrients. When it takes place, it also means that the plant is almost dying, and development is hindered. It as is a cause for alarm as the leaves, flowers, and the vital part of the cannabis plant. They are the products used in creating medicine and smoked for recreational purposes. Therefore, you should watch out for the color every time to check if it has changed from green to purple.

When Cannabis leaves turn purple

To correct this coloring or stop the cannabis leaves changing from green to purple, you have to do the following; adjust the soil ph by lowering it a little bit to be weak acidity. You should also stop excess uptake of water, expose the plant to medium humidity and light, and also providing average room temperature. If you do these, it will enable the plant to carry out its regular activities, such as photosynthesis absorption of nutrients, among others. Therefore, making it maintain its usually healthy green color and experience full development to maturity stage, which will be suitable for yielding and production of quality products.

In summary, as seen, there are many factors discussed that causes cannabis leaves to change their color from green to purple, how it is bad for the plant and corrective measures that you should take to prevent this.
